100% of your donation will go to Katrina relief work of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC).

The AFSC is a Nobel Peace Prize laureate that has a 80-year history of relief work. Your donation will help fund the AFSC's new Katrina Relief program. This program is focused on three main aspects of disaster response:
(1) Immediate aid to evacuees through helping BlackAmericaWeb.com provided monetary aid to families helping to house evacuees.
(2) Meeting with and helping poor, African American, and immigrant communities assess their long-term needs. AFSC is sending in a team of 15 crisis responders and assessors to facilitate this process. They will identify one or two specific communities and help these people develop a 3 - 5 year plan of rebuilding and community organizing.
(3) AFSC is conducting a media campaign, to help give voice to the disenfranchised. This campaign will help Americans hear from real people how social policy decisions affected this disaster.

The AFSC's work is unique in several ways. First, AFSC listens to people affected by disaster and provides assistance based on their requests. Similarly, AFSC works to empower people to change their lives rather than swooping in doing all the work for these people. AFSC seeks to empower, not just provide relief. Second, this is a long-term program. Though the work at this point is providing more immediate aid, AFSC is committed to working with poor, African American, and immigrant communities in the Gulf Coast region for years to come. Once the media coverage dies down, AFSC will still be working with these communities. Third, AFSC recognizes that this disaster has brought to the forefront of our media the vast inequalities, economically and racially, in this country. Part of AFSC's response is to help these people share their story with the nation of how social policies can be changed to help lessen the impact of a disaster of this magnitude.

Your donation will continue to create change in these people's lives for years to come.
