The word pilgrimage has connotations of walking. The word makes many people think of a long, arduous journey to a holy site. Pilgrimage often feels like something well beyond anything you or I could do. These are exclusive definitions. I define pilgrimage as any transformative journey, internal or external, that we experience in our lives. Any movement of change in our lives can be considered a pilgrimage. I like using the word pilgrimage because it makes these common occurences, these everyday transformations, seem more sacred and more meaningful. We choose to undertake some pilgrimages, whereas others happen to us. Sometimes it is all we can do to just accept that change is happening in our lives. If you don't connect with the word pilgrimage, please substitute your own word to describe a transformative journey. |
